On Sunday 25th November 2012 we will once again be welcoming BJJ School founder Felipe de Souza to our sister club in Lincoln. All are welcome to attend and the seminar will be suitable for every level, even beginners. Belt Promotions for CFA and Lincoln BJJ

Sunday 8^th July saw our annual seminar with Escola de Jiu Jitsu Founder Jose Henrique “Leao” Teixeira and BJJ School Head Instructor Felipe de Souza, which we held at our sister club in Lincoln. This was the first time that a seminar headed by two Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belts took place in the area, and as expected it was a real treat for everybody who attended!

As well as covering fundamental BJJ material in great depth, these two instructors also honoured some of our members with stripes and belt promotions. CFA and Lincoln BJJ Chief Instructor Mark Hayes was promoted by both Master Teixeira and Felipe to Purple Belt, a true and significant promotion by these two BJJ legends! Congratulations also go out to Ryan Maxwell, a student of Lincoln BJJ who has the privilege of being the first Blue Belt at the club and Sheffield’s Colin McCurdy who was also promoted to the rank of Purple Belt.

Combined Fighting Arts has Moved!

Combined Fighting Arts and BJJ School Sheffield has moved to a new location, right in the middle of Sheffield city centre. Our CFA and BJJ classes will still be taught by chief instructor Mark Hayes, and fpr the time being we will be offering training on Mondays and Wednesdays.

NEW location: Shodokan Aikido Dojo, Unit 15 Devonshire Business Park, Eldon Street, Sheffield, S1 4GT

NEW class times: CFA – Monday and Wednesday 7.00 to 8.00pm
BJJ – Monday and Wednesday from 8.00pm

Prices will remain the same – £5.00 per class or £45.00 per month

Master “Leao” Teixeira Seminar and BJJ School Grading – Sunday 8th July 2012

We are delighted to welcome back Escola de BJJ founder and Sixth-Degree Black Belt Master “Leao” Teixeira for his annual seminar with us. This year we will be hosting the seminar, which will also include tuition from our Black Belt Felipe Alves de Souza, in our Lincoln club to introduce Master Teixeira to our Lincolnshire members. This is the first time that a seminar taught by two renowned BJJ Black Belts will be held in Lincoln, so it’s definitely an event not to be missed!

Members of BJJ School Sheffield and Lincoln BJJ will be eligible for grading during the seminar, provided that they have reached the required standard. Although the seminar will include a grading for current members, new members are more than welcome to attend and the seminar will be suitable for all levels.

Time: 12.30pm to 3.30pm

BJJ Tournament Success for Helen Harper!

Sheffield Martial Arts Centre and BJJ School member Helen Harper double-medals in her first BJJ tournament!

Depsite having less than a year’s experience in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Helen won a Silver medal in a very competitive women’s division at the previous weekend’s Hereford Open and a Bronze medal in the women’s Absolute. Competing against much more experienced BJJ fighters in the Women’s White Belt Under-64kg division, Helen stayed calm and secured herself second place before going on to face a heavier opponent in the Absolute division.

Needless to say we are all incredibly proud of Helen, and the hard work that she put in to her training sessions leading up to the tournament has really paid off. With less than 12 months’ experience under her (two-stripe!) belt, Helen’s success confirms our belief that Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art that anyone can learn and excel in.

Here’s to the next one, Helen, and no doubt a gold medal to add to your collection!

BJJ Seminar and Grading with Felipe deSouza

On Saturday 28th November, we hosted our final BJJ seminar of the year with BJJ School Chief Instructor Felipe Alves deSouza. This seminar was as enjoyable as ever, with Felipe sharing hints and insights with everyone who attended. The focus of this seminar was the versatile Butterfly Guard, and we all learned some sneaky new techniques that we can’t wait to try out during rolling and competition.

All of the members who attended received stripes on their belts, and there was also a surprise in store when Felipe promoted 3 students to Blue Belt! Huge congratulations to the following students:

Escola de BJJ Seminar with Master Leao Teixeira

On Sunday 10th July 2011, Escola de BJJ founder Master Leao Teixeira paid a visit to Sheffield Martial Arts Centre. We were thrilled to host a seminar with such an eminent BJJ Black Belt! The seminar explored some self-defence elements of BJJ, starting with takedowns from suprise attacks and finishing with controlling and maintaining dominant positions. The new insights that we all gained from attending the seminar have improved our BJJ no end, and we look forward to hosting Master Leao again in 2012!
